Tons of taters: Kitsap food banks take in potatoes from Washington farmers, May 15, 2020

As of this week, there’s a whole lot more spuds in Kitsap County: about 40,000 pounds, to be exact, direct from Washington farmers who’ve found themselves with one billion pounds of potatoes and nowhere to sell them amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Now, those potatoes — once destined to become fast-food French fries, restaurant hash browns and frozen tater tots — will stock the shelves of Kitsap food banks thanks to some clever thinking, a little planning and community partners stepping up to help.
