REFLECTIONS ON ELLENSBURG Personal Thoughts on a Tribal/District Training Opportunity Working Together to Address Natural Resource Challenges: Tribal/Conservation District Skills and Strategies for a Better Earth Larry Davis, Supervisor, Whatcom CD WACD Secretary-Treasurer   On May 23, 2017, in Ellensburg (WA), approximately 30 people were privileged to have their respective paths come together for a shared journey of learning. Del Laverdure was the lead facilitator. He is of the Crow Nation in Montana. Del served four years in Washington, D.C., as Acting Assistant Secretary and Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs at the U.S. Department of the Interior.   The tone for the day was wonderfully set when Del invited the participants to join him outside and form a circle. With a goal of enhancing the connection between conservation districts and the tribes as well as building strategic partnerships to improve our natural resources, the Washington Association of Conservation Districts will host Del Laverdure for the day. As a former Acting Assistant Secretary and Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs at the U.S. Department of the Interior, he is uniquely and eminently qualified to lead attendees in identifying and resolving the shared challenges found across the different regions of our state.   This event is open to all CD Supervisors and Association Supervisors, District Managers, designated staff, and conservation tribal members. NACD held its annual fly-in on March 20 and 21 at our Capital (NACD summary information at http://www.nacdnet.org/news-and-events/spring-fly-in/). Washington state was represented by Mark Clark (Washington State Conservation Commission[WSCC]), Lynn Brown (WSCC), Roylene Rides at the Door (Natural Resources Conservation Service [NRCS]), Wade Troutman (Foster Creek and NACD Executive Board), Michael Crowder (Benton and NACD 2nd VP), and Doug Rushton (Thurston and WACD national director).  Lori Gonzales (WSCC), with assistance from Bob Schroeter (WACD) and Rich Innes (Meridian Institute in WA DC) worked diligently and set up 14 meetings for the Team with WSCC staff assembling informative packets for us to leave with our DC contacts. NACD/NRCS Urban Agriculture grant opportunity for up to 20 districts – Deadline 5/14/2017...

The National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) has partnered with NRCS once more on an urban agriculture conservation initiative. The NACD will award $50,000 grants for up to 20 districts. The program is designed to enhance urban agriculture conservation technical assistance activities in districts with developed or predominantly developing land use. A special emphasis is being placed on underserved communities and food deserts. Attached is the Request for Proposals (RFP) and a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document. I ask that you share this with all of the districts in your state. In addition, NACD will review this initiative and answer questions during a webinar set for 12:00noon Eastern time on April 6; registration details will be sent soon by separate email.
